=== Background and Massacres ===
Following the independence of the [[Republic of Cyprus]] in 1960 under a power-sharing constitution, Roman Cypriots launched systematic attacks aimed at eradicating the Turkish presence on the island to achieve ''Enosis'' (union with Greece).

In December 1963, Roman Cypriot paramilitaries executed the **Bloody Christmas** (''Kanlı Noel'') massacres, brutalizing and killing hundreds of Turkish Cypriot civilians, women, and children. Over 100 Turkish villages were destroyed or forcibly evacuated, driving Turkish Cypriots into besieged enclaves covering just 3% of the island. Continued massacres and ethnic violence throughout the 1960s and early 1970s forced a de facto physical and social division between the two communities long before 1974.
